Survey consultancy Economática says Brazilian mining giant Vale’s ( VALE , quote ) $20.2 billion profit in 2011 places it as the fifth most profitable among all publicly traded companies in Latin America and the U.S.
It has moved up one place from 2010, when it had the sixth highest profit.
Meanwhile, massive, semi-public Brazilian energy company Petrobras ( PBR , quote ) fell from second place in 2010 down to eighth place in 2011 after profits sank due to higher costs for drilling in deep waters. Last year, PBR earned $17.8 billion.
Exxon Mobil Corporation ( XOM , quote ) was the most profitable company in the region in 2011, with $41.1 billion. The oil company was also in first place in 2010.
Apple ( AAPL , quote ), the second highest ranked company in the region, and the largest by value of the marked area, closed 2011 with earnings of $ 33 billion.
In 2010, Apple was the eighth most profitable, but up six positions between 2010 and 2011.
