UK banks investigating Fifa corruption, reports claim

Reports have emerged that UK banks are to begin investigating alleged corrupt payments to Fifa officials.
Barclays, Standard Chartered and HSBC were all mentioned in the FBI indictment of the seven officials indicted last week, the BBC reports.
A Barclays spokesman told the Independent he had “no comment” to make when asked to confirm or deny the reports.
It comes after Sepp Blatter, who was re-elected to serve a fifth term as Fifa president, is due to be questioned by Swiss authorities.
The embattled president warned he would not forget the campaign of “hate” against him and said the English media and US authorities targeted him because they were frustrated their countries had lost out in their bids to host the World Cup.
On Sunday morning the FA chairman Greg Dyke, speaking on the Andrew Marr Show, said he would “work with other footballing nations and sponsors to put pressure» on Mr Blatter, adding he didn’t think the head of world football would last another four years in post.
HSBC and Standard Chartered have been approached for comment.
