»Malvinas» globes at John Lewis.
The British chain of upmarket department stores John Lewis put up for sale globes that mark Islas Malvinas instead of Falkland Islands, as they are called in Great Britain. As a result, John Lewis owners got massive critics and branded “unpatriotic”.
The globes cost 95 British pounds or USD 145 and were made in India.
According to the chain’s representative, the initial series had a “correct” name on globes, but the second one arrived with the name of Malvinas and the capital marked as Port Stanley (British name). The company approved the stock, but after realising the error, it requested suppliers to revise the entire production.
The British press accused the chain in “disrespect” for the British soldiers who died in the 1982 conflict with Argentina. John Lewis apologized for discomfort it had caused in Kelpers (the residents of Malvinas).
For instance, the veteran Simon Weston affirmed the chain should ‘hang its head in shame’ for selling those globes and showing disrespect. The government of Malvinas/Falklands expressed its pity and clarified the territory shall be called the Falkland Islands.
In March, the residents voted to ratify their decision to remain an overseas territory of the UK.
